 Thanks for the research, it's greatly appreciated.

 Canvas can be slow, so it's something to look into
 [http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/canvas/performance/ (ref)].
 Another cause may be that the emoji script is
 [http://www.lognormal.com/blog/2012/12/12/the-script-loader-pattern/
 delaying onload], which delays the loading of your google fonts.
