 reason. It's certainly not a timeout, which is 500 and which would occur
 after 240 seconds on my server. I'm assuming that changing to FILTER_BOX
 is more efficient, which helps the upload. I'll have to go back to basics
 and deactivate everything else in the installation to see whether it's a
 plugin of theme function interfering.

 FWIW, I've seen 503 errors occur because of misconfigurations with
 ImageMagick, but it's hard to tell exactly what is happening without
 checking your server logs to see what error is being reported.
