Don't think it's an overkill. preconnecting to fonts.gstatic.com over
https can save a lot of time.
Ilya Grigorik recommends it for Google Fonts while obviously knowing about
costs:

Second, the css header already has instruction to preconnect. So the
browser will preconnect anyway whether or not fonts cached. It's just that
it's a bit late and preconnect in html is much better.
