Comment:

 Testing in Safari 9.1.2(10601.7.7) cannot reproduce this. Selecting some
 text then typing replaces the text properly. What happens when you press
 Enter instead of typing. What about backspace? All of these behave as
 expected here.

 Think it's worth it confirming this with all plugins disabled and one of
 the default themes.
