 Customizer.

But '''must''' it be ''coupled'' to the Customizer? What if I want to
invoke the same transaction concept from a collection of WP CLI scripts?
Or from any number of other form and field plugins, such as Pods?

Bad Practice(tm)]; do we really want to take that approach in WordPress
 core?
