hosts (thousands of them) it's almost impossible to contact every host. A
lot of them just don't proactively switch users and require the user to
contact them to initiate the process.
That's why a solution like the one @alexander.rohmann proposes would be
great. It's simple, really, nothing new.
I think we're also hugely underestimating the level of understanding
WordPress.org users have about their own self-hosted website(s). Surely
they know it's running on a computer that sometimes needs software
updates. Sell them on the performance benefit & security aspect and they'd
be happy to bug their hosts about it .
WordPress could be the one to educate here. I'd say it definitely should
be.
I've been following this topic for a few years now and it saddens me to
see a discussion like this just repeating itself over and over, with the
same statements coming up. It's obvious WordPress needs a proper PHP
update strategy in order not to alienate itself from the rest of the PHP
world (with [https://stackoverflow.com/research/developer-survey-2016
#technology-most-loved-dreaded-and-wanted ever decreasing developer
happiness] as just one of the results).
I'm glad @jorbin is giving this ticket some much needed attention, but
frankly I'm afraid to get my hopes up right now.
