Comment:

 We now use the approach of creating duplicated attachments for all cropped
 image controls in the customizer, including site icon and custom logo in
 core. It seems to be working okay, and there are some ways to improve the
 experience, such as displaying the context of the cropped images in the
 media library. We should probably maybelater this, and revisit if we're
 able to actually tackle this from a technical perspective in the future.
