 Just got here from the WP 4.6 wishlist post. +1 for a better front page
 settings UI.

 WordPress is not a blog software anymore and I think most users are using
 a static page as front page rather than blog posts.

 My idea would therefore be to remove the radio buttons completely and just
 include two select fields for the Front page and Posts page:

 For new installs WordPress could automatically create a static Home Page
 and a dummy Blog page (instead of the Sample Page) and set these two pages
 as defaults.

 Bonus effect: A static home page instead of the blog posts for new
 installations would also reflect that WordPress is a fully fledged CMS
 now, not just a blog software.

 If users want to display the latest posts on the homepage they can simply
 choose the blog page in the Front page setting.
