 By adding the CSS

 The user will be able to see that there are boundaries to the image
 without the checkered background.  This does not solve the use case when
 some added a white transparent background image since they will still not
 be able to see the image.

 I think the checkered background is a great idea and I think adding a
 border to it will help to show a transparent image better.
