Comment (by alexander.rohmann):
A second opinion would be great. I have to say that as a plugin and theme
developer, @pento's thin conclusion leaves me feeling like a 2nd class
citizen. WordPress core is important, but so is the ecosystem surrounding
it my friend.
To whoever may provide a 2nd opinion: My assumption is that the biggest
concern (problem number 1) here is a potentially large fallout in sites
breaking, and support needed to get them working again. Please correct me
if there is anything else.
There are ways to solve this if we stop looking at it as an open-ended
problem. First, I don't see how the ideas presented in previous posts
wouldn't be sufficient to solve problem number 1. But if it's not enough,
surely there are other ways...
This is a crazy idea, but I'm confident that we could raise enough
awareness among WordPress developers that we could have people volunteer
time over the next year to assist with any support fallout. For example,
setting up some form of coalition where people having issues can open a
request, and have a volunteer look into the issue on their site hands on.
I'm sure there are enough people on the side of moving forward willing
sparing a few hours a month for a while. I'd be happy to organize
something like this as well.
