 I really would like something like that in the core.
 There are some plugins for it, but seems as developers are not so deep
 involved in core code. Or simply dont have time for it.

 Some undesired effects with those plugins:

 - They can influence ordering in backend of unrelated things.
 - They really can mess with ordering od images in gallery.
 - Tremendous slowdown of backend and frontend.

 - Most important, they mess inside ordering in widgets (not something
 anybody want).
 - Etc...etc..
