 I'm not sure but I think this might be a false alarm. I noticed that it
 happened only on some images and yet it didn't seem to be related to which
 image size was showing.

 I had been using EWWW image optimizer. With it disabled, I regenerated
 thumbnails for a page that had exhibited the error. It seems to have
 eliminated the problem.
