The time is right to evangelize users to upgrade PHP 5.2 to newer
versions. A way to accomplish that is to have a notice on the Admin Update
screen with a text like this:
"Your WordPress install is running on version 5.2 of PHP. In a future
release this version of PHP will not be supported anymore by WordPress.
Please contact your hosting provider about having them upgrade their
version of PHP."
PHP 5.2 was released in 2006 and only supported untill 2011. Version 5.3
was released in 2009. It is high time hosting providers update their
infrastructure.
Currently even version 5.3 and 5.4 are considered deprecated.
Hosting providers that still use version 5.2 have neglected to maintain
their infrastructure. When WordPress does not move, they will not move
either. Getting support requests from their customers will be a push in
the right direction.
Currently 11.3% of the WordPress installs are running on PHP 5.2. This way
of evangelizing might make that number go down.
Some people might consider this notice a nag-screen.
I am not sure if it should be dismissible (I think not). It might be too
easy to click it away and forget. It might be a good idea to have it show
on each load of the Update screen.
The text should not have any date or deadline, because it is uncertain
when WordPress will have a minimal requirement for PHP 5.3.
