 No doubt that this function will slow down one of the fundamentally speedy
 core constructs of PHP. Benchmarks would probably be helpful to prove how
 bad this change would actually be.

 That said, the multitude of filters applied during template loading
 process already suffer similar consequences for the sake of flexibility.
 My thinking is, that it would be really great of the rest of WordPress
 were just as flexible.
