 I did another iteration (i6) with the feedback above. Moved customizer
 link (with placeholder icon), aligned the look of the menu to be exactly
 identical to wp-admin at both desktop and mobile and matched the icons on
 mobile to be properly sized (might be just me on this last one, however).

 I've also introduced an idea on how to leverage the current notifications
 that happen as counter bubbles in the sidebar and surface them in a single
 dot in the admin bar, thus achieving a win-win: we leverage the already
 existing navigation bubbles and we simplify the admin bar too. This again
 might be a more long-term view, so we can keep it for later.
