 I think that the ability to turn off "direct" comments would be a very
 good start, and perhaps is something that could be looked at to try to
 trip up the most obvious abusers of the comment system.  It would be a
 benefit to everyone (including Automattic) as they would not have to
 filter out anywhere near as much direct post spam.
