 To me, it's the difference between doing a hack to make this work and
 implementing something more robust. I'd rather not implement a hack to
 make this work, on the whole.

 It should be reasonably easy to identify plugins that add custom nodes to
 the toolbar without links; can somebody grep the repository to find out
 what kind of impact this would have?
