Comment:

 If we do something here, at least for now, I'd like it to be automatic -
 ideally the user shouldn't have to think about what size it is, it should
 just adapt to the screen as needed. Currently, the only screens where the
 entire Customizer controls area should universally be wider are very large
 desktops, larger than 1600px and generally targeting the 1920px screens.
 [attachment:32296.diff] allows the Customizer controls (and theme-install
 preview) to grow proportionally from 300px up to as large as 600px (which
 is what it can reach on mobile), starting to get larger on screens that
 are about 1650px wide.

 For specific controls (and sections and panels, for which custom UIs are
 totally doable), if more area is needed, widgets-style fly-out panels
 and/or media-style modals are good options. But generally trying to keep
 the UI as minimal as possible and within the main controls area is the
 goal.
