 Interesting, I didn't know that. Do you know of examples of db drop-ins
 that do not extend `wpdb`? And is this documented somewhere? (Just
 curious.)

 Overall, if the Adapter pattern can be used without issues then this
 ticket can probably be closed as it's a good enough solution. Thank you
 all for your input and suggestions.
