 The current embed system in WordPress allows for embeds from specific
 websites. But what if putting a URL on its own line in the post editor not
 wrapped as a link would generate a link preview the same way it would, for
 example, in Facebook or Google+?

 Extracting a featured image and other basic information is already part of
 the revamped Press This, for example.  It could store this in the same
 location as the embed code.
