 Speaking as someone who created a plugin that mimics the functionality of
 post formats with a different goal(Post Kinds), I have given this issue a
 lot of thought.

 I am in favor of doing a Press This feature plugin revamp to address the
 issues with Post Formats including the UI.

 Coming from the perspective of my agenda, while it isn't exactly the same
 situation, these notes in the below link discuss the idea of implied types
 based on content, which might be something that could be considered for
 post formats.

 For example, a post becomes an aside if we don't supply an explicit title.
 A post with an embedded gallery is a gallery post. Etc.

 The chooser requires the user to decide on the format. Sometimes that is
 necessary. But what if the properties of the post did that?

 That may be a bit too radical a departure.
