 I put the latest ideas into a new patch.

 I hope we can get a few more people to look at this solution and decide if
 this is actually a viable option (from a design perspective).

 Known bug: When the admin menu is folded, focusing/hovering on the current
 menu item, the submenu is missing the border and has a wrong background
 color.
