Comment (by azaozz):

 A relatively easy fix would be to keep the old CSS, make the spinner
 `display: inline-block; visibility: hidden;` (or no `display` at all) and
 toggle visibility from JS. In fact all spinners would work better is we
 adopt that everywhere.
