 Microsoft Azure recommends modifying core with a similar change for all of
 the WordPress installations on their. And we've seen pretty big
 performance increases with allowing persistant connections, due to the way
 the servers are set up.

 I think allowing an option for the user to enable this is a good idea,
 even if it is an edge case.
