Comment:

 We could probably use `readfile()` with output buffering, but that would
 be the same as using `file_get_contents()`.

 We already try to set `memory_limit` to a maximum possible value
 [source:tags/4.1/src/wp-includes/class-wp-image-editor-gd.php#L91 right
 before that line], I don't see what else we could do here.
