 Waiting for UI feedback, maybe some popular "menu bars" examples can be
 useful for the visual part. Vertical and horizontal bars: though they're
 not used for the "focus" state but for the current active menu. See
 screenshot.
 I'm not a designer but I can see there's a common detail in all of them:
 more space between the bar and the menu item text. White space is good :)
