 If you guys consider making `$index` case-sensitive a regression, I
 believe reverting would be the best way to continue here. I guess [34465]
 has caused unexpected side effects.

 If we go that way, it is possibly best to invoke a `_doing_it_wrong` when
 using special characters, as @jorbin suggested.
