 I have listed some cases where I use Dropdown Taxonomy in my themes.

 * For displaying posts from selected category in Blog Index page. Select
 dropdown with multiple values.
 * Featured Slider/ Featured Boxes - I generally use Category or Tag
 selection. With multiple value support.
 * Testimonials Box - Category dropdown to choose posts from.

 PS: These are points which I listed from my personal experience.
