 Joe,

 I installed this plugin:
 https://wordpress.org/plugins/disable-responsive-images/

 as described here:
 https://wordpress.org/support/topic/is-it-possible-to-disable-the-
 responsive-image-srcset-on-wordpress-44

 It didn't work initially but on the recommendation of my web host, I
 turned off the WP-Super Cache plugin and then resubmitted the feed to the
 validator and it came up clean.

 And then I tested it with Mailchimp and it works.

 So I'm going to trigger Mailchimp at 10 am today and then disable the
 plugin.
