 It was [comment:86 summed it up concisely] by @ericlewis, but anyone a bit
 more curious about the specific implementation employed in the
 [https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-slug-conflicts-with-trash/ No Slug
 Conflicts with Trash] plugin (which incidentally was released Nov 2013,
 has 300+ active installations, and favorited 18 times), I
 [https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-slug-conflicts-with-trash/other_notes/
 added a bit more verbose of an overview] to the plugin's documentation.

 I also just updated the plugin and added documentation for the purpose and
 expectations of each of its unit tests, so anyone reading the code should
 have a clearer idea of what's going on.
