 Thank you! this is certainly a much simpler approach to updating!

 Unfortunately this did not help. There is a new post that is unable to
 "publish" and another item that was in the process of being edited prior
 to the WP Update that will not "update." If I cannot add content to the
 site, I may have to abandon WP altogether. I have already spent at least 5
 hours on support chats with my hosting provider this week and they are
 clueless, telling me I have done everything I am supposed to in order to
 troubleshoot.

 Tonight I found another person having the same trouble on the forum and
 posted on that thread. There are other threads describing problems with
 the upgrade. I will keep hoping a solution is found.
