 Also, if you compare the numbers in the current stats here:
 https://wordpress.org/about/stats/

 You might notice: 14% of sites use PHP 5.2 and at the same time around 16%
 use WP 3.7 or earlier (which was released 2013)
 So my impression is, that people with PHP 5.2 are the people that do not
 even update WP to current version.
 Just an impression by looking at those charts...
