 The aside element appears to be absolutely appropriate for sidebars. They
 even show it being used just that was as an example in the HTML5
 specification:

 http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/sections.html#the-aside-element

 Look down to "The following extract shows how aside can be used for
 blogrolls and other side content on a blog".

 I am uncertain as to the use in accessible browsers, but the specification
 is very clear here. What's the issue, exactly? What is landmark navigation
 and how does it relate to this issue?
