 point here is consistency: having whitespace for both or have not *for
 both*. I agree with @emzo: removing white space it's the only known
 current solution 100% guaranteed to work. Then, it's up to theme authors
 CSS-fu to be aware of inline-block rendering, if they count on the
 whitespace to provide spacing between menu items, they're doing it wrong.
