Comment:

 There is still the issue of "focus bar in combination with the submenu
 arrow", as [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28599#comment:51
 pointed out by aferica].

 The only thing I could come up with, was getting some separation between
 the bar and the arrow, by adding a border in the same color as the arrow
 and (slightly) adjusting the background-color of the submenu. It looks
 like this:

 Only done via in-browser editing for now. This adds a 6 pixel border to
 the left side of the submenu, so this might be a deal-breaker.

 Please share your ideas.
