 Hi,

 Aha!

 Having tested this on another Wordpress installation I can confirm that
 installing php5-curl enables updating to work for themes/plugins/core.

 Perhaps a check could/should be put in place in WP to throw an error if
 php5-curl is not installed, or at the least a note in the documentation
 saying that it is recommended?
