 At its most basic level WordPress uses it to route ugly URLs to pretty
 URLs. Without one, your blog will still work, but you are limited in your
 permalink structure. There are many many more uses for a .htaccess file,
 but changing the URLs is the main thing WordPress is using it for at
 first.
