 Was able to finish up a draft tonight.  See [attachment:29557-idea-3.diff]
 Shiny new parser in only 300 lines of code.  Needs performance testing to
 find out if it's going to work as advertised.  Needs review by core team
 to decide if that's the direction we want to take in 4.0.1.
