 Why PNGs and not SVG files? SVG would render at full resolution on retina
 displays and has pretty broad browser support (save ie8, of course).

 In lieu of SVG, making the PNGs 2x the current size would be a workaround
 (sharp on retina, scaled down on non-retina).

 Oddly enough I was solving the same issue, at about the same time, via a
 plugin:
