 Next problem:

   appears to have 2 distinct meanings in the editor.  In either
 configuration,   is used as a placeholder for blank lines.  This
 doesn't seem to break anything in the editor, but we will have to step
 very carefully around the wpautop() logic and how it handles those
 entities.
