Comment (by nacin):

 wp_send_json_success(), wp_send_json_error(), and wp_send_json() are
 designed to "do one thing only", that is admin-ajax.php + our JavaScript
 utility `wp.ajax`. Happy to reconsider, but I think this is a particular
 use case and not something that needs more things stuffed into it.
