 Perhaps in a past sense of the word, but who's to say we don't remake the
 concept some? They *should* work as stand-alone, but that's not always the
 intended use case. Lets remember [comment:2 nathanrice] comes from Genesis
 where it is meant to be a parent theme and not directly modified.
