 The attachment:26959-01.patch brings back the wpview plugin and that
 gallery view that was removed in r22567 and makes the following
 adjustments:

 * Render the full gallery
 * Adds css to match the look-and-feel of the default gallery
 * Adds a single substitute character to keep the placeholder from being
 wiped out
 * Updates the tinymce wpview plugin to match the style used in the other
 plugins

 There are still a number of adjustments needed to meet all the proposed
 requirements listed in the description, but I thought others might be
 curious to see what I have so far.
