 No way to do that because menu links that are not pages do not have a
 post_id, so they cannot be parent pages.

 I use your technique for some of my sidebar menus, where the sub-menu
 items are a small, selected subset of a larger parent group, and I don't
 want all of the child pages of that group in that menu. Or when the sub-
 pages may be a few selected pages from several different parent groups.

 But I generally create actual parent pages and use another plugin
 "Subpages Extended" to list that page's child pages on the parent page so
 it isn't totally blank if the user opens it. The parent page then becomes
 a small menu or "Nav Helper" page that opens when clicked from the top
 menu. I think that is more user friendly and consistent than a null menu
 item that does nothing when the user clicks it.
