 I strongly agree with Nacin's alias approach. Typical use cases are other
 names for Pending that may/may not trigger email notifications.

 The only use case outside of Pending that I have had is make a Trash-like
 alias of 'Inactive' on a CPT that doesn't clear after 30 days that removes
 it from 'show_in_admin_all_list'
