 Hello Wollari, thanks for your report and sorry you never got a response.

 There was a Media overhaul in !WordPress 3.5 which makes your patch
 outdated. There is now also a custom link type where you can specify a
 custom URL.

 I don't see a need for adding buttons for links to thumbnails, and it
 seems like I'm not the only one, because ticket has had no traction in
 four years.
