 I played with this a bit.  Seems like it's headed in a good direction!

 An oddity that I haven't entirely tracked down yet:

 If you try to crop an image by dragging on the image:
 * The styles for the selection box don't show
 * The selection box is created with the wrong left/top coordinates, which,
 with the styles enqueued, makes it
 [http://screen.objects.dreamhost.com/02-19-2014-10-42-46.png show in the
 upper left] rather than over the image.

 I've [attachment:21811-modal-04.patch attached a patch] that includes the
 previous changes, plus enqueues the styles for imgAreaSelect, which should
 allow it to be easier to "See" what's going on.  If I manage to track down
 where things are going wrong, I'll post an update.
