 Working through cleaning it up here as well, for another pass, and
 consolidating a couple tests.

 pbearne: Question -- it looks like you have a few comments in the tests on
 sizes that don't line up with the actual size changes being performed.
 Should I mark it up according to the actual sizes passed?
