 Sorry to make things more confusing but I just noticed my issue was caused
 because my css hook to show the current page was .current_page_item  which
 wasn't working on the archive page.  Then I noticed that .current-menu-
 item does seem to work if you make a 'link' nav item and link it to the
 name of your custom post type relatively, in my case the post type was
 work, so '/work/'

 Still feels a little hacky to add it in in this way, I think a box for
 adding post type archives would make more sense to some people.
