Comment:

 [attachment:28722.2.diff] looks interesting. This looks like it could be a
 nightmare for testing, though. We'd need to make sure that nightly builds
 force a new $wp_version. (Testing develop.svn /build would still be
 painful, though.)

 I agree with avoiding IO where possible.
